Description
The Braided Hair (or Coronet) Half Cent design was minted 1840-1857, but only eight of those years were struck for circulation. It was the last design of the Half Cent. Quarter dollar size copper coin.Original mintages for this type were small--only 39,812 for 1850. (The entire mintage could have been purchased for 9.06!) According to Breen, three dates (1849, 1850 and 1857) are considered to be Rarity 2, which means less than 1,250 known. If you want a numismatic challenge, for a collection of the 8 business strike dates. It can be done--I have completed three sets--but it is a challenge.
Many people collect/save first year of a type and many people save the last year of a type. 1850 may have "fell through the crack" since it is neither. This date has increased in value significantly in recent years, compared to other dates of this type. Its relative rarity may finally be recognized in market values.
Breen 1:1-A, Rarity 2, which Breen defines as less than 1,250 known. This is from my personal collection of half cents (by die pairs). It has been in my collection since 1985, when I acquired it as part of the Heritage auction of the Franchville collection.
